"Das “kleine Finale” fand letztmalig bei der EM 1980 statt, seitdem gibt es einfach kein Spiel um den dritten Platz mehr. Warum? Weiß niemand genau. Historisch wurde das Spiel abgeschafft, als nur acht Teams an der Endrunde teilnahmen.
Bei zwei Gruppen mit je vier Teams, deren Erst- und Zweitplatzierte das Halbfinale bestreiten, war die Wahrscheinlichkeit einer wiederholten Konstellation vielleicht zu hoch. Offenbar spielt Platz 3 auch keine Rolle im UEFA- oder FIFA-Ranking."
